Offshore jackets are full‑coverage personal flotation devices intended for sustained use in exposed, open‑water conditions. They combine buoyancy with features that improve survival and recovery after a man‑overboard incident: high neck protection, a larger buoyancy profile, integrated crotch or leg straps to prevent riding up, reflective panels, attachment points for safety harnesses, and pockets for accessories such as lights or whistles. They are worn rather than stowed, so comfort, fit and freedom of movement are central to their usefulness on deck.
Where and how offshore jackets are used
These jackets are used when sailing beyond sheltered waters—coastal passages, overnight trips and offshore passages—where a person in the water may be exposed for longer periods, sea states are rougher and recovery can be harder. Crews wear them on watch, in rough weather, or whenever the consequence of going overboard is high. Offshore jackets are also the typical choice when a harness and tether are required for moving safely on deck.
